The Shapella hard fork has been implemented on the Goerli testnet, which is the last trial before Ethereum validators will be able to draw out their Ether (ETH) from the Beacon Chain.
Despite some challenges, the hard fork still took place. According to Ethereum core developer Tim Beiko, deposits were successfully processed but the process was not as smooth as it could have been due to some testnet validators failing to upgrade their client software before the Goerli fork.
He attributed the delay to validators on the testnet having “less motivation” to do the upgrade since Goerli’s ETH is without value, but he anticipates that validators will be ready for the fork on Ethereum’s mainnet.
EIP-4895 of Ethereum Investment Proposal will cause ETH staked on the Beacon Chain to be transferred to the operational layer.
The Shapella upgrade includes five different EIPs, but EIP-4895 is the most awaited one due to its potential to advance Ethereum towards a working proof-of-stake network.
Shapella is projected to become operational on the Ethereum mainnet in early April.
